[ARCHIVED] Cold Weather Alert - 2/2/2023

Cold Alert

Good evening.  This is Chief Bohannon at the Eastham Police Department with an important message.

As you know, we are expecting some of the coldest weather on Friday and Saturday that we have experienced in the last several years.  Temperatures are expected to fall rapidly during the day on Friday with Friday night low temperatures at or below zero.  On Saturday, temperatures will only rise to around 20 degrees.  In addition, we will experience gusty 25-35mph winds during that time period pushing windchill temperature to minus 25-35 degrees.  With these extreme windchills, frostbite can occur on exposed skin within 15minutes.  If you need to be outdoors on Friday night and during the day on Saturday, wear extra layers of clothing and face coverings to protect yourself.  Also, please be mindful of pets during this time.  It is not safe for pets to be left outdoors for extended periods of time.

With the winds that are forecast, we are not anticipating any widespread power outages.  However, if power outages occur, we will move quickly to open a warming facility for residents in need and would announce the opening of a warming facility with another call.  If any residents experience any isolated heating issues and feel at risk, please call the Eastham Police Department non-emergency number of 508-255-0551.

Fortunately, all we need to do is look ahead to Sunday for some good news!  Temperatures rebound quickly back into the 40’s!  Have a great evening and stay warm everyone!
